The name "S.T.A.L.K.E.R." is a backronym for Scavengers, Trespassers, Adventurers, Loners, Killers, Explorers and Robbers. The series is loosely based on the novel Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, and influenced by the movie Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky. The player takes the role of a "stalker" - a name given to trespassers and adventurers who have come to explore the exclusion zone and its strange phenomena. As a result, the physical, chemical, and biological processes in the area were altered, spawning numerous nature-defying anomalies, artifacts, and mutants. The series is set in an alternate version of the present-day Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in Ukraine, where, according to the series' backstory, a mysterious second Chernobyl disaster took place in 2006. is a first-person-shooter survival horror video game franchise developed by Ukrainian game developer GSC Game World. The following weapons appear in the video game S.T.A.L.K.E.R.S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game published in 14 years since 2009's Call of Pripyat, and the first to be released on consoles. In August 2023 it was again delayed to 2024, pushing it past the point where the gap between announcement and release narrowly under that of Duke Nukem Forever.
The real-life Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 delayed the release yet again to 2023 while the title was changed to "Ch Ornobyl" to reflect the native Ukrainian spelling of the word. The game resurfaced years later in 2018, with the release date set for 2021, later delayed to 2022. Initially announced following the release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat, it was initially planned to have released in 2012, before it was ultimately cancelled on the year of its intended release. It is a first-person survival horror shooter game, like the original trilogy, and is set to return to the Zone, now rendered beautifully in Unreal Engine 5 and featuring proper character voice acting and motion capture, along with vastly better graphics. trilogy, developed and published by GSC Game World, with a planned release date for the first quarter of 2024 on PC and Xbox Series consoles. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is the long-awaited sequel to the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
